Four New Westminster field lacrosse players helped the Burnaby Mountain Selects to winning records at the Ultimate Performance Lacrosse Fall Shootout I & II at South River High School in Annapolis, Maryland last month.
The sophomore Selects, including defender Jordan McKenzie and attack Mathew Sweeney, fashioned a 3-2-1 record, while the first-team, with Max Gerhardt and goalie Dylan Sharpe finished with a 3-3-0 record.
The top-rated recruitment showcase featured over 100 teams across two divisions, competing in a round-robin format.
Both Burnaby Mountain teams competed in the tournament's Rising Sophomore Division and represented the only elite squads from Western Canada and the Pacific Northwest.
Among the Selects opponents were top club teams from Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, Ontario, Virginia and Washington, D.C. The sophomore Selects posted an overall record of 3-2-1, including a close one-goal loss to Spartans Lacrosse (MD) and wins over CLAXPO (19-0), Saints (12-6) and Cav Lax (9-2), an elite club team from Virginia coached by former NCAA Division I Head Coach Bear Davis (Robert Morris 2004-2011). The freshmen Selects went 3-3, defeating all three fellow 2015 grad teams that they faced and suffering their only losses at the hands of sophomore (2014) teams, one-year their elder.
Each team played a total of six games over two days of competition. After going .500 on Day 1 with a win, a tie and a loss, the sophomore Selects went 2-1 on Day 2 to improve their winning percentage to .600 on the weekend.
The freshmen Selects went 3-3, going a perfect 3-0 versus fellow 2015 teams and 0-3 playing up versus 2014 grads. In six games, the sophomores doubled up their opponents by a goal differential of 52-26, while the freshmen outscored the three freshmen teams that they faced by an impressive margin of 32-14, while trailing 28-7 in their three losses to sophomore opponents.
The Selects are coached by Simon Fraser University men's lacrosse head coach Brent Hoskins and SFU assistant coaches Luke Genereux, Chris Fox and Chris Tessarolo.
