Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club tops at junior and senior nationals

The Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club topped the team aggregate in three of four junior and senior men's and women's divisions at the national championships in St. Catharines, Ont. this weekend.

The Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club topped the team aggregate in three of four junior and senior men's and women's divisions at the national championships in St. Catharines, Ont. this weekend.

The Burnaby centre took both the junior and senior men's and women's titles, while placing third in the senior women's competition.

Sunny Dhinsa was a big winner, taking gold in both junior and senior men's super heavyweight class.

Dhinsa, a recent finalist for Sport B.C.'s high school male athlete of the year, defeated teammate Jaspreet Sahota in the junior final before winning a second gold against Gurjot Kooner, also from Burnaby Mountain.

The Simon Fraser University-based men won a total of six medals, including a gold by Manjot Sandhu at 96 kilograms.

Manvir Sahota also won a silver medal behind champion Matt Miller of Montreal at 84kg.

Harjitpal Purewal and Sukhan Chahal both earned bronze medals at 74 and 55kg, respectively. Chahal also won a second third-place medal at the junior weight class.

Aso Palani, Saman Sepehripour, junior Jasmit Phulka and Chanmit Phulka also scored top-six points for the Burnaby Mountain senior men's team. Jasmit Phulka was a gold medallist at 84kg in the junior championships.

The Burnaby men's team defeated runner-up Montreal 37-35.

The junior men's team also garnered a total of six medals at the nationals.

Sanjay Rekhi got to the junior men's 84kg before losing to Phulka. Kambir Johal also placed second at 96kg to Montreal's Riley Otto.

Brock Lamb and Ryan Yewchin both placed fourth in their respective 74 and 96kg weight classes.

The junior men edged both London-Western and Brock clubs 35-33.

In women's wrestling, Justina DiStasio earned a pair of medals for Burnaby Mountain, winning the junior title at 72kg while placing third as a senior.

Darby Huckle and Ashley Topnyk also took gold for the Burnaby Mountain junior team.

Huckle defeated London-Western's Valerie Ouellette in the 44kg final. Topnyk defeated Victoria Kent of Saskatoon at 59kg.

Nikkie Brar also came away with a medal, placing third at 51kg.

Other club placers were Hiroko Araki and Carolyn Failanga at 48kg and St. Thomas More Collegiate grad Monika Podgorski from New Westminster.

The junior women outpointed Guelph for top spot 37-28.

The senior women's team were shutout in three separate final matches.

Amanda Gerhart placed second behind Michelle Fazzari of Brock at 59kg.

Danielle Lappage won a silver medal in the 63kg final against champion Justine Bouchard of Calgary.

Stacie Anaka also came up short against Dorothy Yeats of Montreal at 67kg.

The Burnaby Mountain women finished with 26 points, behind the first-place Dinos and runner-up Brock with 50 and 44 points, respectively.

Ontario won the provincial team standings in all four categories at the nationals.

Matt Gentry of Burnaby and Tonya Verbeek from Brock were named co-wrestlers of the year.
