The Burnaby Mountain Selects elite boys' field lacrosse team made both theunder-13 and -15 finals at the recent University of Denver team camp.
The u-15 Selects fashioned a 5-1 record enroute to an 8-5 loss to the Golden State Titans from California in the championship final.
The u-13s went 4-2 before also meeting host Denver in the camp final with a similar result.
Burnaby's Tavin Grant, a midfielder attending St. Thomas More Collegiate, was named to the camp all-star team, along with New Westminster defender Matthew Buchanan.
Jon Smalley from Vancouver College was named MVP midfielder at the camp.
In u-13, Erik Maas of New West was named the all-star MVP midfielder.
The u-15 Selects, including Jordan Gabriele and Lucas Greene of Burnaby and goalie Niklas Friesen of New West, outscored their combined opponents by an impressive 65-34 margin, going 4-1 on Days 1 and 2 with wins over Denver Elite 10-5, DoCo 12-2, All Out Lacrosse 16-3 and Golden State 6-3. The team's only loss was 10-9 in overtime to the Rocky Mountain Rattlers. Awarded the top seed following the round robin, the No. 1 Selects would once again doubled up No. 3 Denver Elite in the semifinals, before falling 8-5 to the Titans in what was a back-and-forth championship final.
In seven games, the u-13s outscored their opponents 41-38, posting a 3-2 record in the round robin, earning the No. 3 seed heading into Sunday's playoffs.
After starting the tournament 1-2 with an opening 7-3 win over Fellowship of Christian Athletes from Colorado the Selects dropped back-to-back games to Colorado High School State Champion, Cherry Creek and University of Denver development team, Denver Elite.
The Selects bounced back on Day 2, posting convincing wins over Rocky Mountain Rattlers, 11-1 and 12-0 over Golden State.
As the No. 3 seed, Burnaby Mountain advanced to face No. 2 Cherry Creek in the semifinals, avenging an earlier 11-1 loss two days prior, with a 7-4 win in the rematch. But Burnaby was unable to muster another upset, falling 10-1 to Denver Elite in the u-13 championship final.
