Kimberley Newell of Burnaby posted a pair of wins to earn a place on Canada's under-18 national women's hockey team following a selection camp in Calgary.
Newell, who played goal for the Kootenay Ice of the B.C. major midget hockey league last season, allowed just one goal in two outings at the 12-day camp, including a 2-0 shutout over Team White on the final day of competition on Saturday.
The Burnaby Winter Club product stopped 33 shots in the final game at the 40-player selection team camp. She also backstopped team Red to a 7-1 win over Norway on Aug. 6. The 17-year-old Newell was busy again in the Canadian cage, making 32 saves against Norway.
The Burnaby keeper is one of just three B.C. players named to the 22-player squad that will take on the United States in a three-game series Thursday, Aug. 16 to Sunday in Blaine, Minnesota.
The other two B.C. players are defender Alexa Ranahan of Salmon Arm and North Vancouver forward Hannah Miller.
B.C. failed to place a player on Canada's national under-22 development team. Burnaby defender Kaleigh Fratkin was the only player from B.C. named to the 40-player squad for the selection camp which ran in conjunction with the u-18 camp.
