Simon Fraser University split a pair of games at the Thanksgiving Classic men's basketball tournament in Belmont, California last week.
The Clan men opened with an 84-64 loss to Fresno Pacific University on Friday, before knocking off tournament host Notre Dame de Namur 75-67 in the final game of the competition on Saturday.
Elijah Matthews led the Clan with 19 points, while David Gebru posted a double-double for the Clan, scoring 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Anto Olah and Taylor Dunn also contributed in double figures, adding 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Burnaby university.
Notre Dame tied the score on two occasions in the first half, but SFU led 36-23 at the interval.
In the second half, Notre Dame took a brief lead with 12 minutes left to play, but later in the game SFU went on a 12-5 run sparked by a tip-in from Ibrahim Appiah to ensure the win.
The Clan men improved its record to 5-1 leading up to its conference opener against NCAA Division II national champion Western Washington Vikings on Saturday. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
Earlier, SFU lost for the first time this year to Fresno Pacific.
Gebru had a team-high 19 points and seven rebounds for the Clan. Matthews chipped in with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Free-throw shooting hurt SFU. The Clan made just nine of 19 from the charity stripe.
On Dec. 1, the Clan will hold a ceremony at half time during its game with Western Washington to honour former head coach Stan Stewardson.
Stewardson coached the SFU men's basketball program for nine seasons in the 1970s and '80s.
Under his mentorship, Stewardson coached 11 players to the national men's team and 16 went on to play pro basketball, including current NBA Portland Trail Blazer's assistant coach Jay Triano.
Stewardson received a lifetime achievement award from Metro Vancouver Basketball Foundation in 2004 and was inducted into the Basketball B.C. Hall of Fame the following year. He was also inducted into the Burnaby Sports Hall of Fame in 2007.
