Blue Jays win Hyack ball tourney

Gold medal is just the third one for New Westminster team

The New Westminster Blue Jays etched their names in Little League history books, winning the Hyack major A baseball tournament at Justin Morneau Field last weekend.

Only two New West teams (in 1965 and 1988) have managed to bring home the gold from the largest Little League tournament in Canada.

The Blue Jays dominated the round- robin portion, taking Game 1 from the Coquitlam Yankees by a 19-0 score. Matt Birovchack earned the game MVP.

Game 2 had a similar outcome with New West on the right side of a 23-2 dismantling of the Kerrisdale club, Jalen Sami was named game MVP.

In Game 3, game MVP Oscar Porcellato smashed a three-run home run to deep center field in the third inning en route to a 12-0 win.

The New West Reds also went undefeated through the round-robin to earn a berth in the final.

Max Yuen, who earned the game MVP in the tournament final started on the mound for the Blue Jays and was sensational through his two innings of work.

Mateo Lesjak got the start for the Reds and also allowed no runs. The game stayed scoreless until the top of the third when Matt Birovchack ripped a Liam Bates’ pitch to left center field that sparked a two-out rally and put the Jays up 2-0. The Reds would get one back in the fifth but the Jays would hang on to win the game 2-1.

Trevor Tong was named tournament MVP.
