Belle leads Clan golf

SFU men's golf team takes 11th place in Washington invitational tournament

Burnaby native Michael Belle had the lowest Clan scores as the SFU Clan men's golf team finished 11th in their most recent tournament in Olympia, Washington.

Belle shot rounds of 76 and 73, with his 149 total good enough for 21st place overall in the Saint Martin's Invitational.

CSU-Stanislaus won the overall team tournament with a score of 585, just one stroke ahead of Western Washington University and the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

Jamie Hall of the University of Hawaii at Hilo won individual honours, carding a 139 with scores of 72 and 67. Darren Hupfer of the University of Victoria finished second, a stroke behind at 140 with scores of 71 and 69.

Other Clan finishers included Jordan Melanson, who shot 79-71 for a 150 total and a tie for 26th.

Calum Miller was another three strokes back while another Burnaby native, Nate Beauchamp, shot 86-77 for a 163 total and 68th spot.

The tournament was marred by rainy weather, particularly on the opening day.

"A combination of very heavy rain, falling temperatures and high winds slowed the pace of play to a six-hour crawl (on the opening day)," said Clan head coach John Buchanan. "Club grips had to be dried off before use while all greens had to be cleared of debris before putting. The winds were starting to bring down some sizable branches, which were a real hazard to both players and families who were braving the elements. The weather for this tournament was as ugly as it gets."

The Clan's next tournament begins on Oct. 23 at the University of Victoria Vikes Shootout, which will be played at the Cordova Bay Golf Club. www.twitter.com/AlfieLau
