B.C. wins Alumni Cup for second time

B.C. won the Alumni Cup Canada's under-16 national field lacrosse title for a second consecutive year.

B.C. won the Alumni Cup Canada's under-16 national field lacrosse title for a second consecutive year.

The provincial team, including Jordan McKenzie, Connor Robinson, Mitchell Stokes and Tyler Vogrig of New Westminster, defeated Team Ontario 14-8 in the gold-medal final in Oshawa, Ont. on Sunday.

Vogrig and Stokes scored two goals and one goal, respectively in the championship final, while New West junior A box player Chase Malcolm led all B.C. scorers with four markers, including an unassisted game-winner in the third quarter.

Malcolm opened the scoring in the opening two minutes. But Ontario took leads on two separate occasions in the first quarter before Vogrig tied it at 3-3 on a late unassisted counter.

Ontario again pulled even at 4-4 early in the second quarter, but B.C. took the lead for good outscoring the east 4-1 through the remainder of the period, including Vogrig's second unassisted tally of the game.

B.C. trounced Alberta 17-2 in the semifinal.

The provincial all-stars easily won their pool with one-sided wins over Team Iroquois, Nova Scotia and Manitoba.

"The young men in our Team B.C. program played with poise and maturity. They executed on our game plan perfectly," said provincial head coach Scott Browning. "It's always great to win. Repeating is hard, even harder on the road. I am very proud of these young guys."

Robinson led the New West contingent with seven goals and three assists in five tournament games. Malcolm collected 11 goals and 14 total points for B.C.

B.C. won its first-ever Alumni title last season.

And Browning says this is likely not the last national title for this provincial age group.

"We're good enough for sure," Browning said. "Teams will always vary by year and group, but we're right there for sure."

In the u-19 First Nations Cup final, Ontario blanked Saskatchewan 22-0 to win the title for a fourth consecutive year.

B.C., with Burnaby's Tyler Buchan in the lineup, won the bronze medal following a 29-3 victory over Alberta in the consolation final.

Buchan helped lead B.C. to the easy victory, scoring five goals and assisting on a sixth in the Sunday win. Buchan finished the competition with seven goals.

B.C. lost 12-9 to Saskatchewan on Saturday.
