The Burnaby/New Westminster under-14 girls’ basketball team finished fifth at the Basketball B.C. provincial championships.
The u-14 girls went 3 -1 at the championships. The team’s only loss, a two-point defeat to the North Shore.
“It was quite an accomplishment especially considering I had six Grade 8s and four Grade 7s on the team,” said coach Stephen Bruyneel.
BurWest opened on Friday night with a 50-34 win over Vancouver West. The team was led by Jaylynne Huynh of Burnaby Central with 22 points.
The teen team then upset the favoured Okanagan West team Saturday morning 43-37, with Huynh getting 16 and Brooklyn Monks of St. Thomas More potting 13.
North Shore stopped the BNW squad following heartbreaking 36 – 34 loss., Huynh led the team again with 13 points, while Monks chipped in with 8 points.
The girls finished off the competition with a 43-21 win over Vancouver Island North on Huynh’s team-high 14 points.
Huynh and Cassia Girolamo or STM were both invited to the u-14 provincial team selection camp next week based on their play.
