Barcelona teens take step up in Kamloops

The under-15 girls' Coastal Cup champion NW Barcelona passed its first test, winning the u-17/18 level title at the Kamloops Slurpee Cup soccer tournament over the Victoria Day weekend.

Barca blanked the Vernon Selects to take the tournament final title 2-0 on second-half goals by Rachel Hutchinson and Carly Cody.

Alessia Mastromonaco was named the game MVP, while Juiet Davies, Celeste Bain and Ellen Williams had solid fourgame performances.

The Royal City club side opened with a 3-0 win over the Nelson Selects on Saturday.

Cody potted a pair of firsthalf tallies, before Hutchinson got the team's third goal on a brilliant header off a corner kick. Arsh Kaler was named Barca's game MVP.

New West and local opposition TSS Academy played to a 1-1 draw in a later Saturday fixture.

Ally Fabian helped give Barca the lead midway through the second half, setting up Montana Wegner for the goahead goal.

TSS tied the match later in the period off a free kick from just outside the 18-yard box. Defender Sarah Ng was named Royal City's game MVP.

On Sunday, New Westminster had an easy time of it over Kootenay South, romping to a 7-2 victory.

Miki Knowler, with two goals, and Fabian, with a single counter, put Barca up 3-0 in the opening 10 minutes of play. Mastromonaco also slotted her first goal of the tourney in the rout. Knowler was named the team's game MVP.

The Royal City u-15's will forgo the u-16 girls' division next season and contest the Metro Select over-17 age group.
