A few New West sport briefs

The New West Spartans brought home eight medals from the Legion Canadian Youth Track & Field Championships held in Ottawa from Aug. 5 to 7. Ethan Strome won gold in the under-16 boys' 200-metre hurdles in a B.C. record time of 25.34.

The New West Spartans brought home eight medals from the Legion Canadian Youth Track & Field Championships held in Ottawa from Aug. 5 to 7.

Ethan Strome won gold in the under-16 boys' 200-metre hurdles in a B.C. record time of 25.34. He also earned a bronze medal in the 100m hurdles.

Ahmad Nizamani placed first in the long jump with a distance of 6.60 metres.

Nizamani, along with fellow Spartan clubmate and team B.C. athlete Bogdan Pavel, earned a gold medal in the 4x400m medley relay and a silver medal in the 4x100m relay.

In the u-18 girls' division, Simran Rai earned a second-place medal in the 3000m race walk, while Manisha Kandola ranked 12th overall in the youth girls' high jump.

SCHOLAR ATHLETES

New Westminster field lacrosse defenders Matthew Buchanan and Hayden Goss were among the 56 recipients of the second annual Burnaby Mountain Selects scholar athlete awards.

Buchanan, a Glenbrook Middle School student, and Goss, a New Westminster Secondary student, will be acknowledged for their outstanding academic achievements at the Maple Leaf awards dinner in January of next year.
