A 14-year-old Coquitlam youth was arrested on May 26, following an incident at the Braid SkyTrain Station involving an assault with a knife and theft.
On May 25 at 10 p.m., at the bus loop outside the Braid SkyTrain Station in New Westminster, the victim was waiting for a bus and saw a group of teenagers kicking the nearby lockers, according to a Transit Police media release.
The victim asked the teenagers to stop and the 14-year-old boy began yelling back saying back off and that he was on drugs. He then advanced on the victim with a knife in his hand.
The victim defended himself by kicking the boy and grabbing his cellphone, causing the boy to run away, but he grabbed the victim's briefcase before taking off.
"When the victim tried to retrieve his case, he was punched in the face by one of the girls who also ran away," the media release states. "Witnesses advised the teens had jumped on the train, believed to be heading to Lougheed Station."
Around 1 a.m., a Transit Police officer spotted the two teens at Lougheed and took them into custody. Transit Police also located the briefcase at Braid station, in a garbage canister.
The 14-year-old boy has been charged with assault with a weapon and theft under $5,000 and has been remanded in custody. His next court appearance is on June 11. He has also been charged with breaching his release conditions related to two prior robbery charges.
Despite his age, the youth has had nearly 50 negative run-ins with the police involving offences such as theft, drugs, robberies and breaches. The teenaged girl was released with charges pending further investigation.
