SHOPPING FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Royal City Gogos are raising funds to help African Gogos.

The group is having a Grandma's Attic new and used sale on Saturday, April 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the CAW hall at 326 12th St.

Quality collectibles, décor items, artisan crafts, African jewelry, used books, bedding plants, perennials, a service auction and tea and goodies are among the items for sale.

Royal City Gogos raise funds for the Stephen Lewis Foundation's Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign, which raises funds to assist African grandmothers who are caring for some of the 14.8 million children who have been orphaned in subSaharan Africa by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.

Funds are directed to community-level organizations that provide necessities such as food, educational supplies, uniforms and school fees, home-based care, HIV counselling and testing, adequate housing, and grief support and microcredit loans.

Many African grandmothers (Gogos) are raising their grandchildren, after their own children died of AIDS.

LEARN MORE ABOUT SAPPERTON

Sapperton is the focus of A Sense of History Research Services' upcoming walking tour.

The tour, which aims to provide stories and information that will enhance your understanding of the history and heritage of the Royal City, takes place on Sunday, May 6.

It starts at 1: 30 p.m. at Sapperton Park, at the corner of East Columbia and Sherbrooke streets.

A Sense of History Research Services will offer two tours of Sapperton this year, highlighting the area's history and development that's underway.

The first tour will travel from Sapperton Park, along East Columbia Street to the corner of Brunette Avenue, and return to the park.

"The major points will note the Brewery District with the new Thrifty Foods store and many buildings to come on the site, some of the brewing history of the city, and part of the 150-year anniversary of Royal Columbian Hospital," said a press release. "Included will be stories of four churches, an orphanage, a few former houses of interest, two early inns, some early businesses, two schools, mill workers' bunkhouses, streetcar lines, a curious triangular building, and a brief bit on Sapperton Park itself."

A tour in July will provide more details about the park and Royal Columbian Hospital. The tours are free, take about one-and-ahalf to two hours and run rain or shine.
