Youth and seniors wanted

Everything's ready for a collaborative art project to get started next week - all that's needed now are the participants.

Youth between the ages of 13 and 18, and seniors over the age of 50 are invited to apply for the Heart 2 Art program that will take place at Century House and the New West Centre for Youth.

The 10-week art project will see groups of teens and seniors come together to create intergenerational art in five separate workshops: theatre/performance, mosaic, spoken word, variety -a collection of music and dance - and digital photography, which is already underway.

The theme of the project is "Making the world a better place through art," which each group will interpret through their individual art projects.

Having the younger and older generations working together is one of the wider goals of the municipally-run seniors centre, said Shelly Schnee, recreation programmer for Century House.

"We believe that it transfers to the wider community as well, so if there's a senior walking down the street and a youth walking down the street, and they've worked together on a project, they're going to engage in a conversation and be respectful of each other," she said.

A senior leader, youth leader and art instructor specializing in each medium will lead the groups of up to 16 in two-hour sessions on evenings or weekends.

For youth in the program, they will also have the option of logging volunteer hours for their community participation, Schnee said.

At the end of the series, the artwork will be displayed and performed at a closing gala at Century House in April.

Funding for the Heart 2 Art program is from a New Horizons For Seniors grant from the federal government.
