New West residents can help grow the tree canopy coverage in the city by purchasing low-cost trees at the city’s upcoming tree sale.
The City of New Westminster’s spring tree sale starts on Monday, Feb. 28, at which time local households or businesses can buy up to two trees at a cost of $10 each. The trees will be available for pickup on Saturday, April 2 between 9 and 11 a.m. in the east parking lot of Grimston Park.
For the past couple of years, the city has been holding tree sales in the spring and fall to provide an affordable opportunity for folks to help increase the city’s tree canopy.
As part of its goal of growing the city’s tree canopy to 27% by 2030, the City of New Westminster aims to plant 3,330 new trees on private land and 8,500 new trees on public land, including 6,300 new street trees and 2,200 new trees on city-owned park and civic lands. One of the ways the city plans to increase the tree canopy is through a tree sale.
No yard? No problem. The spring tree sale also includes European Strawberry Tree and Red Dragon Maple trees, which are both apartment-friendly varieties that are suitable for balcony spaces.
Rising Sun Redbud, Madame Lemoine Lilac and Japanese Stewartia are other trees being made available in the upcoming sale.
The City of New Westminster made 150 trees available to residents at each of the spring and fall tree sales in 2020 and 2021 – with all trees selling out.
