Do you love newspapers? City newspapers, Canadian newspapers, foreign newspapers? Are you interested in news and perspectives from across the country or around the world? Are you living in New Westminster but would like to read newspapers from your home country or city? Or maybe you're interested in reading in a foreign language?
Well, the New Westminster Public Library has a fabulous resource for you. PressDisplay offers access to 500 newspapers from 70 countries in 37 languages, in a format that looks like the originals, and can be accessed at the library or from home. Newspapers from the Americas, Africa, Asia, Europe and Australia/New Zealand are available. w Figaro (France), The Guardian (United Kingdom), Türkiye (Turkey), Manila Times (Philippines), Bihari Napló (Romania), China Digest (China), El Colombiano (Colombia), Al Shabiba (Oman) are just a sample.
Once logged on with your library card, take your time to browse: vibrant photos from around the world, the day's headlines, a selection of interesting stories, and more. Try not to be overwhelmed! Alternatively, use the blue Select Title menu button in the upper right-hand corner to find a publication by country, language, or title. You can set your homepage to display news stories in a selected language using the Show News In feature in the right-hand column. Some articles even allow for basic translations and an audio format (look for the Listen and Translate buttons).
Don't be discouraged if it takes some practice - PressDisplay has a lot of features and content so some exploration may be needed at first. It's well worth it once you get the hang of it. And, yes, if you were wondering, many of the papers include crossword puzzles.
From the library website, www.nwpl.ca, go to Resources (purple tab in the upper right corner) and log in on the Online Resources page. For questions, visit the reference desk or call the library at 604-527-4665.
