The Hidden Gifts of Tantrums workshop aims to show parents important lessons from their kids' outbursts.

Parents dread the moment their child bursts into tears, kicking and screaming in a fit of rage, but a workshop being hosted by New West Family Place and Kinder Books is aimed at showing there are lessons to be learned from tantrums.

The Hidden Gifts of Tantrums is being presented by Bridget Miller on Monday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and on Wednesday, May 31 from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at River Market, Community Space by the Circus School in New Westminster.

Dana Osiowy, executive director at New West Family Place, said the goal of the parenting workshop is to teach parents how to see tantrums in a different way.

“The key takeaways from Bridget Miller's work is that, how can we be more grounded as parents so that we can be there for our kids,” she said. “Her work is not about how you need to make your child different.”

The workshop will teach principles that are applicable to children of all ages, and parents will learn practical tips and strategies to handle tantrums more effectively.

For those who would like to participate, there is a $10 registration fee per adult. The money raised from the registration fee will be fully used to support New West Family Place parenting and children's programs and renovations at its new location.

“We focus on supporting parents and families with children ages zero to six so that they have access to the resources and support they need to be successful and to really thrive,” Osiowy said. “Our new location is Quayside, so we're going to have a really close relationship with Anne (Uebbing, from Kinder Books) and everyone (at New West).”
