A woman was critically injured during an assault at a New West residence on Tuesday afternoon.
Members of the New Westminster Police Department attended a home on Princess Street about 1 p.m. on March 2, after receiving a report of a serious assault.
“The victim was transported to hospital, where she remains in critical condition,” said a NWPD press release. “A nearby school was temporarily sheltering in place as a precaution while NWPD officers secured the scene.”
The house was behind yellow caution tape on Tuesday afternoon while police investigated the assault.
NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Sanjay Kumar said police are unable to comment at this time how the victim sustained her injuries.
“Our Victim Services Unit did attend the scene and provided support for the residents in the home,” he told the Record. “There were residents in the home at the time of the assault.”
New Westminster police report a suspect was safely taken into custody that afternoon, with the assistance of the Vancouver Police Department.
Andywele Mullings, a 42-year-old New Westminster resident, has been charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of assault with weapon.
According to police, it is believed the suspect and the victim are known to each other.
“I would appeal to members of the public who were in the area at the time, who may have witnessed something suspicious, to contact us,” Kumar said in a news release. “Any small piece of information could assist us as we piece everything together.”
The New Westminster Major Crime Unit is leading the investigating, which is in its initial stages.
