New Westminster police are seeking witnesses after an assault with a weapon.

Police in New Westminster are asking for the public's help after an apparent assault with a weapon at a local 7-Eleven.

In a release, New West police (NWPD) said officers were called Monday (Nov. 21) at roughly 2:30 p.m. after witnesses reported hearing a gun shot and saw what they believed to be an injured man holding a large knife walk into a convenience store.

NWPD has since confirmed the establishment was 7-Eleven on the 900-block of 12th street.

Other witnesses told police the suspect assaulted someone inside the store before both the suspect and victim fled.

Police rushed to the scene but were unable to find anyone matching the suspect or victim descriptions.

Officers then secured the scene, began collecting evidence, interviewing witnesses and asking for CCTV footage.

"We're in the early stages of this investigation," NWPD spokesperson Sgt. Justine Thom added.

"We're trying to determine the well-being of the person who was assaulted inside the store. We're also working to determine what the relationship, if any, the victim and the suspect have to one another."

Anyone who saw suspicious activity in the area is encouraged to contact NWPD at 604-525-5411.
