This weekend’s activities focus on community – whether it’s supporting local businesses and businesspeople, helping the environment or celebrating local programs and events in New Westminster. We’re continuing with our popular feature, The Record’s Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for the Oct. 18 to 20 weekend.

1.  Enjoy an interactive comedy show for people of all ages, when Improv Against Humanity brings its show to the Massey Theatre stage as part of the Momentum Youth Arts Movement festival. The interactive comedy event takes place on Friday, Oct. 18 at Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show is at 7 p.m. Tickers are $5 in advance or $10 at the door. For tickets, call the Massey Theatre box office at 604-521-5050.

2.  Search for the great pumpkin at Realtor Derrick Thornhill’s annual pumpkin patch in Queen’s Park. The event takes place on Saturday, Oct. 19 from noon to 3 p.m. at the picnic shelter in Queen’s Park and features hot chocolate, coffee and Timbits compliments of the Tim Hortons Community Cruiser. Thornhill has ordered 1,000 pumpkins for the event, which also includes pumpkin carving, a colouring contest, popcorn and grab bags. Wear your cutest, scariest or most original costume and you could win a prize. The event is free, but donations will be accepted for Monarch Place, a transition house for women and children fleeing violence.

3.  Enjoy a delicious bowl of soup and help Greens and Beans Deli raise funds to help businesses impacted by the recent fire on Columbia Street. Leona Green and son Matt Green are donating proceeds of all soup sold on Saturday, Oct. 19 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to help local businesses. Councillors Lorrie Williams and Bill Harper will be on hand to dish out some soup at the deli that’s located at 143 East Columbia St.

4.  Celebrate 30 years of fun and fitness with Fitness New West, which got its start back in 1983. Held at Centennial Community Centre, Fitness New West offers a range of classes including cardio mix, power yoga, body fit, core fitness, kick and box, step mix and Pilates. For full details on classes, visit www.newwestpcr.ca.

5.  Help rehabilitate the urban ecosystem through the Uncover Your Creek: Citizen Science program taking place at lower Hume Park from 10 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Oct. 20. People of all ages are invited to learn about local ecology, help manage invasive plants, plant native plants and monitor water quality in the Brunette River.
