Spring is now officially here, and as we continue through April, it's time to get out and about and enjoy the best the Royal City has to offer.
We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. We have some great offerings for this weekend in New Westminster.
1 Get cheering for some of the best ringette players in the country as the final games of the Canadian national ringette championships take place on Saturday, April 14. Games have been taking place in Burnaby and New Westminster since April 9 at Bill Copeland Arena at 3676 Kensington Ave. in Burnaby, 8Rinks at 6501 Sprott St. in Burnaby, and Moody Park at 701 Eighth Ave. right here in New Westminster. Weekend passes, which include the championship final on Saturday, are $20 for two (B.C. resident's rate). For more info and a full schedule, go to www.ringette.ca/crc.
2 Get drinking the new Killer Cab from Pacific Breeze Winery at their public release open house on both Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
The self-named garage winery at 6-320 Stewardson Way features some of the biggest and boldest wines in the city, and if you haven't tried their offerings, this might be the best opportunity - for all those of legal drinking age - to see what is being made literally in our own backyard.
No reservations are required for this open house event. For more info, call 604-522-2228 or go to www.pacificbreeze winery.com.
3 Get listening on Saturday, April 14 to the Westminster Church Choir and other talented musicians as they present Sing Alleluia, a retelling of the story of Christ's victory over death, through dynamic new songs, well-known hymns and gospel songs. The event's at 7: 15 p.m. at Westminster SDA Church, 7925 10th Ave., Burnaby (enter from 11th Avenue off of Sixth Street). The concert is designed for people of all ages and denominations. Seating is limited and available on a firstcome first-served basis. A freewill offering will be taken. For more info, call 6045246969.
4 Get literary for a weekend of Lit Fest New West events. On Friday, April 13, A Night of Mystery is at the New Westminster Public Library, 716 Sixth Ave., at 6: 30 p.m. Local mystery authors Colleen Cross, Don Hauka, and Elizabeth Elwood will surprise and thrill with their stories and clue you in on their mysterious writing secrets. The next day, Lit Fest New West is on all day at Douglas College at 700 Royal Ave. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., local and provincial authors and poets will read from their work on the college concourse. There will also be workshops, performance events and marketplace exhibitions.
At night, the Laura Muir auditorium will host music, poets and performances from 7 to 9: 30 p.m. For more info, contact the Arts Council of New Westminster at 604-525-3244 or www.artscouncilnew west.org.
