We're continuing with our popular feature - our staff's Top 5 (Or More) Things To Do This Weekend. This week, we've got some high school football, several craft sales, a couple of arts events at Massey Theatre and a chance to learn about one of the natural fish wonders of North America.
1 Get cheering for the New Westminster Hyacks on today (Nov. 4) when they host conference rival West Vancouver at 7: 30 p.m. at Mercer Stadium. This game was originally scheduled to be played in West Vancouver, so it's a bit of a bonus home game for the Hyacks. The winner will get into the playoffs and the loser still has an outside chance, depending on results from other games. Tickets available at the door.
2 Get Christmas shopping on Saturday, Nov. 5 for a quartet of sales in the city. First up is the crafters' sale, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Queens Avenue United Church at 529 Queens Ave. When you're finished there, go to the craft sale and tea at Century House, running from 10: 30 a.m. to 2: 30 p.m. Crafts and gift ideas galore will be on display at 620 Eighth St. Next, you can try out the Fall Fair at Shiloh-Sixth Avenue United Church, running from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Last, but not least, there's the Christmas Tea and Bazaar, at Knox Presbyterian Church at 403 E. Columbia St., running from 12: 30 to 3 p.m.
3 Get charitable on Sunday, Nov. 6 for the Anjela Gerardo-organized benefit concert for the Make-a-Wish Foundation of B.C. at the Massey Theatre. Anjela, a 16-year-old Grade 11 student at Burnaby Central Secondary School, is singing the concert with the goal of raising $6,000 - enough to grant a wish for a child with a lifethreatening medical condition. Tickets are $15, and the concert is set to start at 6: 30 p.m. Anjela will be joined by several musical friends for the occasion.
4 Get fishy on Saturday, Nov. 5 for the Fraser River Discovery Centre's O-FISH-al birthday party for George, its famous white sturgeon. The party starts at 1 p.m. Accompanied by an adult, preschool children aged three to five are invited to take part in the fun activities, including a puppet show, games and crafts. Space is limited so pre-registration is recommended. Cost is $5 per child, with adults by donation.
5 Get strumming for International Guitar Night at the Massey Theatre on Friday, Nov. 4 at 7: 30 p.m. at Massey Theatre at 735 Eighth Ave. Featured performers include founder Brian Gore, Adrian Legg, Lulo Reinhardt and Marco Pereira. Started in 1995, it was a way to bring together the world's finest guitarists and composers to play their original songs.
Tickets are $28 regular, $18 for students and seniors, and are available at www.masseytheatre. com, by calling 604-521-5050 or at the door.
