1 Get entertained and educated at the Royal City Kids Fair, a free event that features more than 50 exhibitors and vendors catering to new parents, babies, toddlers and older kids. All the fun takes place on Saturday, Jan. 21 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Fraser River Discovery Center at 788 Quayside Dr. in New Westminster.

2 Get sweet at the Sinfully Divine Dessert Experience, which is being put on at the Coming House Café by local business owner Melissa Balfour of Pretty Up Parties and travelling baker Ashley McLean of Sprout Vegan Bakery. People can attend the 6 to 7: 30 p.m. or the 8: 30 to 10 p.m. seating. Seating is limited, and tickets must be purchased prior to the event. See www.prettyup parties.com.

3 Get into the Celtic spirit by attending a Robbie Burns Day dinner featuring the New Westminster Police Service Pipe Band. The dinner features entertainment, door prizes, a raffle, and a dinner and dance. The fun takes place on Saturday, Jan. 21 at the Engineers Hall at 4333 Ledger Ave. in Burnaby. Tickets are $50. 4 Get ready to celebrate the Year of the Dragon at Chinese New Year's Eve on Sunday, Jan. 22. To celebrate, Wild Rice restaurant is offering a special Year of the Dragon menu that pays homage to the water dragon. The menu will be available from Jan. 22 to Feb. 4 and costs $38.88 for two people (or one person with a dragon-sized appetite. Wild Rice's dragon platter for two includes Dungeness crab salad, steamed ling cod, and albacore tuna tartare. Call 778-397-0028.

5 Get out and get moving. A walk along the riverfront esplanade is a great way to spend some time. Grab a coffee and hit the esplanade. While you're down there, take a peek at the Westminster Pier Park construction that's underway on the waterfront.
