Whether you're interested in relaxing with the family, taking in some entertainment or learning about some local history, there's something in the mix for you this weekend in New Westminster. We're continuing with our popular feature, The Record's Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend and offer the following suggestions for the July 19 to 21 weekend.
Pack a picnic and head to Queen's Park for the Summer Movie Series, which is showing Finding Nemo on a big screen. The movie takes place on Friday, July 19 at dusk. In case of poor weather, call 604-527-4634 to check on the status of the movie - but it doesn't appear that will be a problem this weekend.
Enjoy the Shadow and Dreams Theatre Company's performance of The Merry Wives of Windsor by William Shakespeare at the Queen's Park bandshell. The free show gets underway on Saturday, July 20 and continues on Sunday, July 21, Saturday, July 27 and Sunday, July 28. All performances take place at 2 p.m. at the bandshell in Queen's Park. This is the seventh year the Shadows and Dreams Theatre Company has presented family-friendly Shakespeare productions in Queen's Park.
Don your best "loyalist" attire and head to Queen's Park, where the second annual B.C. Loyalist Day is being celebrated on Sunday, July 21 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Members of the Vancouver Branch of the United Employment Loyalists will celebrate the arrival of their Loyalist ancestors, the first refugees to Canada in 1783 after the American revolution. Anyone who is a descendant of Canada's United Empire Loyalists is invited to pack a picnic, bring lawn chairs or a blanket and join the celebration that takes place at the picnic shelter in Queen's Park.
Get a bite to eat and enjoy some summer beats when DJ Gabsung presents a mix of reggae, hip hop and house at the Summer Sessions at River Market. Summer Sessions takes place on Sunday, July 21 from 3:30 to 6 p.m. at 810 Quayside Dr.
Learn about some of the folks who have played a role in New Westminster's museums and collections, at this month's cemetery walking tour. The tour takes place on Sunday, July 21, starting at 3 p.m. near the cemetery office at 100 Richmond St. Along the way, participants will learn about many people with close ties to the city's museums, including Irving House, the New Westminster Museum and Archives, the Samson V Maritime Museum, the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame, the Royal Westminster Regiment Museum, the police department's museum - and even Cap Hobbis's private museum. The tour costs $10 per person (cash only). For more information, call A Sense of History Research Services at 604-522-5466 or email [email protected].
