The weekend brings along a potpourri of events in New Westminster — from an art show to a stand-up comedy and an R&B concert in the park.

That apart, the annual Terry Fox Run returns to the city, and an all-new Bigger Ideas Conference makes it debut.

Here’s a rundown of the top events in New West this weekend.

Sept. 14 to 17

Solo Art show

A new solo art show in town turns the spotlight on an artist's mental health struggles.

Each work is an attempt by Tianna Hall to capture her state of mind at different points during the years since the pandemic. What she has come up with is a large collection of colourful canvases that help kick-start a dialogue about the important topic of mental health.

  • When: 4 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, 1 to 8 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday.
  • Where: Arrieta Art Studio, 707 Front St.

Comedy show

Dive into the weekend with some laughs at a stand-up comedy show featuring Los Angeles-based comic Mark Smalls.

Besides being a member of the golf comedy podcast, Country Club Adjacent and earning fame through his gaming live streams on Twitch, Smalls has also worked with some of the best comedians in the industry such as Norm MacDonald, Bobby Lee, Andrew Schulz and Nikki Glazer.

Bigger Ideas Conference

More than 20 women leaders from all over the world are coming to New West this weekend to be part of the Bigger Ideas Conference — a career and wellness event for women and those identifying 19-plus.

The event will offer lessons in leadership, entrepreneurship, career transition, wellness and finance, besides the opportunity to connect with a host of mentors.

Sept. 17

Terry Fox Run

Every year, scores of people participate in the annual Terry Fox Run — to honour Fox’s dream of a world without cancer.

So far, the Terry Fox Foundation has funded over $800 million of cancer cure research; here’s your chance to do your bit.

Join the 43rd Terry Fox walk/run/wheel event at New West’s boardwalk and support the cause. There is no entry free. Register on Terry Fox Run website or onsite at 9 a.m. on the run day.

Concert in the park

Summer is not forever. Enjoy the last few days of the season at an outdoor concert at Moody Park.

The instrumental R&b band Vibetown will be performing their ode to diverse eras of music that continue to inspire their music.

This is a chance to not just enjoy some cool contemporary tunes, but also to meet the musicians who started their journey at Vancouver's Olympic Village in False Creek, and spent a good chunk of time performing at the city’s own Heritage Grill.
