This weekend is shaping up to be a good time to go shopping, take in some arts and cultural offerings and support some local groups and individuals. We're continuing our popular feature, Our Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend. Here are The Record staff's suggestions for the March 1 to 3 weekend.
Support a local business with the first Cash Mob New West event. Participants are asked to bring $20, meet at a designated site and walk to a local business and shop. Cash Mob New West participants will meet at Sapperton Plaza at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 2 and shop at the local store. The idea is to support a local business, have fun and meet new people. If you're interested in attending or getting more information, visit the event's facebook page at CashMobNewWest. Or you can just show up - the more the merrier.
Discover that helping out is good for a laugh at the Books for Brooklyn fundraiser at Lafflines Comedy Club. Stand Up for Mental Health and Lafflines are bringing local comedians together to raise funds to support a school in Brooklyn, New York that was impacted by Superstorm Sandy. The event, which is $20, takes place on Sunday, March 3 at 7 p.m. at The Columbia Theatre, 530 Columbia St. In addition to a lineup of comedic entertainment - courtesy of the folks at Stand Up for Mental Health - the event includes a silent auction. Tickets are available at www. lafflines.com. For more information about Books for Brooklyn or group ticket sales, contact Diane Moran at [email protected].
Listen to the music of Brahms, Beethoven, Mozart and more at the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra's classical pops concert on Sunday, March 3 at 2 p.m. at Massey Theatre, 735 Eighth Ave. Admission is by donation. For more information, visit www.mas seytheatre.com.
Assist youth in the arts when the Backstage Youth Performers Society takes to the stage for A Night of Stars at the Massey Theatre on Sunday, March 3. The show features an evening of performances by local singers, dancers and musicians in support of youth in the arts. Tickets for the event, which includes a VIP reception and intermission with silent auction, range from $17.50 to $69.50. The VIP reception gets underway at 6: 45 p.m. and showtime is 8 p.m. For tickets, call the Massey Ticket Centre at 604-521-5050.
Celebrate the newest literary undertaking by Ben Nuttall-Smith, who is launching two poetry books at the Twice as Nice book launch. The event takes place on Saturday, March 2 from 1 to 2: 30 p.m. in the backstage room at the Heritage Grill, 447 Columbia St. The event is sponsored by the Royal City Literary Arts Society. The event may just inspire you to enter the society's Write On! Contest, which has a March 15 deadline and includes winners and honourable mentions in non-fiction, fiction and poetry categories.
