Arts and cultural offerings are taking centre stage in New Westminster this weekend. We're continuing with our popular feature, The Record's Top Five (or More) Things to Do This Weekend. Here are our offerings for the Feb. 22 to 24 weekend.
Get an idea of what it's like to live without vision at the Seeing Things Differently, Living with Low Vision Forum. The New Westminster Lions Club is teaming up with the Century House Association to present the forum on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Century House, 620 Eighth St. Everyone is welcome.
Glam up and enjoy a night out on the town at the In Celebration of Film - A Night at the Oscars event. The Arts Council of New Westminster is hosting the event at the Columbia Theatre, where folks will be able to have their photo taken on the red carpet, make their picks of Oscar winners, enjoy a delicious dinner and watch the Academy Awards. The event takes place on Sunday, Feb. 24 starting at 5 p.m. Tickets are $85 per person or $80 each for those who book a table. Tickets are available at the Arts Council's office in Queen's Park.
Check out the latest offering at the Laura C. Muir Theatre at Douglas College, when award-winning actor Tayo Aluko takes to the stage in Call Mr. Robeson. The one-man biographical musical play is based on the life of Paul Robeson, an actor, singer and civic rights campaigner. The show takes place on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 7: 30 p.m. Tickets are $20, or $18 for seniors, adult students aged 18 and up or groups of 10 or more, and $10 for students aged 12 to 17 years. Tickets are available through the Vancouver and District Labour Council (604-254-0703), at www.brownpaper tickets.com/event/309138 or at the door. The theatre is located on the fourth floor north (room 4100) of the New Westminster campus at 700 Royal Ave.
Treat yourself to high tea at the historic Galbraith House on Sunday, Feb. 24. Held on the last Sunday of each month, the teas feature tasty finger sandwiches, pastries and teas at all three seatings - 10: 30 a.m., 12: 30 p.m. and 2: 30 p.m. Partial proceeds of each high tea go to a charity (this month's charity is Animal Aware and March's charity is the Group of Five). Tickets are $39.95 and are available by calling 604-782-7298 or 604-529-1788.
Enjoy an afternoon of poetry at this weekend's Poetic Justice event, featuring Candice James, Janet Kvammen and Donna Ross. The event, which is hosted by Lilija Valis, takes place on Sunday, Feb. 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Heritage Grill's backroom, 447 Columbia St.
