SCHOOL ZONE

Speaking of back to school, every year around this time, ICBC issues a reminder to drivers to slow down in schools zones and be aware of young students.

Back to school can be an exciting time, but it's also a time to be extra cautious and watch out for young students.

NEW BOARD AT DOUGLAS

Douglas College Foundation recently elected its new board, which is now headed by Darlene Hyde.

Hyde, vice-chair of Westminster Savings Credit Union, brings many years of corporate experience to Douglas College Foundation and is currently executive director of NAIOP Vancouver, an association that represents commercial real estate developers, owners and investors.

Hyde succeeds New Westminster resident Baj Puri, who remains on the board as past-chair with Nigel Lark, vice-chair; Wendy Lindvik, treasurer; and Coquitlam Coun. Neal Nicholson, secretary. Other board members are Karen Baker-MacGrotty, Nick Cheng, George Home, Ben Kendall, Suzanne Kyra and Ted Lau.

QAYQAYT ELEMENTARY

The New Westminster school district is now seeking requests from community service providers who are interested in providing services and/or programing at the new Qayqayt Elementary School, which is currently under construction.

As a part of the overall plan to build the school, the district has secured funds from the government's Neighbourhood's of Learning program. The funds would be used to build an additional 15 per cent of space at the new school to meet indentified needs in the community.
