Teen Mental Health Counselling
Teens in New Westminster can access counselling at the new NWSS Wellness Centre – along with a host of other programs and services. The new centre is holding an open house on Saturday, May 14 from 1 to 3 p.m.

What if there was a place in New Westminster where children, teens and families could go to make connections and find care for their mental and physical health?

There is — and you’re invited to drop in to check it out next weekend.

The new Wellness Centre at New Westminster Secondary School is holding an open house on Saturday, May 14 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Visitors will be able to take a tour of the new centre, enjoy family activities (with prizes) and hear from local health and wellness experts.

The new centre is located on the main floor of New Westminster Secondary School (820 Sixth St.), with outside access at the front of the school.

The centre is a community wellness hub that’s designed to provide programs and services for students and families in the city.

School District 40 is running the centre in partnership with community organizations, including Cameray Child and Family Services, Child and Youth Mental Health, and Lumara Society, which offers grief and bereavement care. Youth care workers and a clinical counsellor from SD40 are also available on site, and Fraser Health will soon have a nurse practitioner in the centre to provide primary health care.

The Wellness Centre offers a place for support groups, workshops and other learning opportunities that run the gamut of health-related topics, including physical well-being, sexual health, gender identity, mental health, substance use and more.

The centre’s May calendar shows a variety of activities, including sessions devoted to mindfulness, art, anxiety and healthy relationships.
