We pick the city's newsmakers of 2012

New Year's Eve is fast approaching - and for those of us in the newsroom, what better time to pause, reflect and remember all that's happened in New Westminster in 2012.

New Year's Eve is fast approaching - and for those of us in the newsroom, what better time to pause, reflect and remember all that's happened in New Westminster in 2012.

It's certainly been a year of highs and lows in the Royal City, kicking off with a highly publicized mugging in Queen's Park just a few days after the new year began, continuing into a summer fraught with political tension between city council and the public, and rounding out with yet more bad news from the school district this fall.

In amongst all that were plenty of good-news tales that continued to renew our faith in the world and in our little corner of it here in this small city.

Earlier this month, The Record editorial team sat down to debate and discuss the top stories of the year and, more importantly, the people behind them.

Our following round-up includes those items that came out as clear winners (or losers) for 2012. We're betting that some of our readers will disagree with our choices, and we want to hear all about it if you do.

Where did we hit the target? And where did we go all wrong? Which stories were most important, or interesting, to you? Send us a letter to [email protected].

Without further ado, our choices for the highlights (and lowlights) of the year that's passed.
