A B.C. police watchdog has been called to investigate an injury in police cells, the New Westminster Police Department said in a news release.
A man was reportedly alone in a cell at around 7 p.m. when he “required medical attention after sustaining a reported injury,” the NWPD said in a news release.
The man was taken to hospital for assessment and treatment, the force said.
“The cell block is staffed by an on-duty jail guard,” said Sgt. Jeff Scott. “Because the male was in our custody at the time of his reported injury, we have engaged the Independent Investigations Office who have since taken conduct of the investigation. We have also notified the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner of the incident.”
With the matter being investigated by the IIO, police said they would not be providing any further information on the incident.
“Please note that all aspects and circumstances of this incident will be the subject of independent investigation and verification by the IIO BC,” police said in the news release.
The IIO investigates incidents involving police that result in serious injury or death.
