The march is on to find a cure for cystic fibrosis, a fatal disease of the lungs and digestive system for which there is no cure.
On Sunday, May 26, Cystic Fibrosis Canada will host the Great Strides 5 kilometre walk in Queen's Park to help raise funds to improve the lives of people living with this illness.
Cystic fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disease affecting Canadian children and young adults, according to Cystic Fibrosis Canada. Each week in Canada, two children are diagnosed and one person dies from cystic fibrosis. Last year, half of those who died were 34 years old or younger.
In New Westminster, local woman Eva Markvoort was four days away from her 26th birthday when she died from the disease three years ago. Her family and friends will be celebrating her life at the walk again this year with Team Reddy For a Cure.
All funds raised from the walk will support vital cystic fibrosis research and care programs funded by Cystic Fibrosis Canada.
The ninth annual event will feature a barbecue sponsored by Mr. Mikes and live music from Freedom 95, as well as activities for kids. Registration opens at 10 a.m. and the walk begins at 11 a.m.
Queen's Park is located at 600 Eighth St. in New Westminster.
