Looking for a rewarding opportunity helping people in need? The New Westminster Police Department is looking for volunteers for its victim assistance unit.

Volunteer caseworkers provide “significant, meaningful assistance” to victims and/or witnesses of crime. Last year, volunteers provided more than 5,700 hours of support to more than 1,500 people, according to a notice on the police department’s website.

Volunteers should be empathetic, non-judgemental and excellent communicators. They should also be able to stay calm and focused in stressful situations. Both classroom and field training is provided. Volunteers must be 20 years old or older and willing to work two nights a month. A Class 5 drivers license is also required.

The department is hosting an information session on Oct. 1 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Justice Institute of B.C. at 715 McBride Blvd. To reserve a spot call 604-529-2525.
