The city is giving notice that it will lease space in Anvil Centre to Amur Financial Group for the purpose of opening Piva Modern Italian Restaurant and Wine Bar. The prominent space, which had been planned as a restaurant, has been vacant since Anvil Centre opened in 2014.

The cultural hub will be launching its choral program on Oct. 4. No experience is necessary, according to choir director Shane Raman.

“I think our ambition is to start a family of choirs, so eventually, we may have a children’s choir, and then a sort of a smaller chamber choir for people who are a little more advanced,” he said.

The centre is holding a choral workshop and a master class on Sunday, Aug. 30. Local chamber choir Van Deca, Melanie Adams and Raman will be on hand. The day will include a special tour of Anvil Centre.

The inaugural season will run until Dec. 6, with a seasonal performance at Anvil Centre. Raman said he sees future seasons running from September to June. Practice will run Sundays from 2 to 4 p.m.

Singing has always been a part of Raman’s life. He grew up singing in church choirs, which led to a bachelor of music in voice performance from UBC. Today, the baritone sings with music intima, Cor Flammae and teaches private voice lessons at the Sarah McLachlan School of Music and the Delta Community Music School.

“He has a magnetic personality, and very charismatic, but also has fantastic credentials and a great history,” said Corbin Murdoch, arts programmer with the city. “We’re thrilled to have him on board.”

While there are no auditions, registrants need to schedule an intake appointment with Raman. There is a registration fee of $157.50.

The choral workshop and master class runs from 2 to 4 p.m. in Anvil Centre Studio 417. There is a $15 registration fee.
