A knife-wielding woman prompted police to block off the area surrounding East Columbia and Sherbrooke streets Tuesday afternoon.

Officers descended on the scene shortly before 3 p.m. and diverted traffic and pedestrians out of the area while they dealt with the “active and unfolding” situation.

The situation was revealed later to involve a woman with a knife. She was not threatening anyone, so officers used crisis intervention techniques to resolve the incident safely, said acting Sgt. Jeff Scott, spokesperson for the department.

The woman, who wasn’t named, was taken into custody and later to hospital. Police are not recommending charges.
