After receiving several complaints about thefts from unlocked cars, the New Westminster Police Department is warning people to make sure that their vehicles are locked.
The thieves try the door handles of several vehicles hoping that one will be unlocked. Police suggest that people keep valuables out of sight and ensure that all doors are locked and windows are rolled all the way up when vehicles are exiting their vehicles, according to a media release from the New Westminster Police Department.
Items like laptops, smart phones, stereo systems, credit cards, sunglasses and GSP devices in particular, are common items that get stolen, as well as change and cash, said Staff Sgt. Paul Hyland, spokesperson for the department.
A good way to prevent car theft is to park in secure underground parking lots if possible, or parking on well lit and well travelled streets. It is also especially important to lock presents in the trunk during this time of year, Hyland added.
