A sea of people is expected to take over downtown New Westminster this weekend for one of the city's biggest parties that showcases the community's vibrancy.
The 2024 New West Pride Street Festival is taking place Saturday, Aug. 17, along Columbia Street between 4th and 8th streets from 3 to 8 p.m.
Last year, roughly 40,000 people joined in on the popular event that celebrates and supports the 2SLGBTQIA+ community, as well as embodies acceptance and respect for all.
It'll serve as the culmination of Pride Week in New West, Aug. 8 to 17, that included a flag raising in Tipperary Park, a Drag Brunch fundraiser for Trans Youth, a paddlewheel cruise, karaoke and more.
"Pride is an amazing opportunity for our community, both allies and queer people to gather and celebrate the diversity and vibrancy of gender and sexual orientations," Katie Stobbart, president of the New West Pride Society, told the Record after the 2023 edition.
"But it's also something else; while homophobia and transphobia threaten the well-being of our neighbours, friends and family on an international scale, our Pride celebrations are an important signal to our community and beyond that New Westminster is a place of belonging for all."
Two stages will be set up along Columbia Street — the main stage will be located at the 4th Street intersection and the community stage at 6th — and will feature more than a dozen performers.
Also on tap is a pet parade contest for festival-goers that get into the Pride spirit with their four-legged friends.
Four lounges will be set up at each block on the south side of Columbia Street to provide seating and shelter, including a pet-friendly zone at McKenzie Street. Moodswing Cafe and Bar (655 Front St.) will serve as a quiet, low sensory zone.
