Two New Westminster residents are among the three people who died in a single-car accident on the Coquihalla Highway on Friday night.

A 2003 Ford Expedition carrying five people went out of control after hitting the soft shoulder between Merritt and Kamloops shortly after 7:30 p.m.

The Expedition rolled over and plummeted 15 metres over an embankment.

Killed in the crash were Sada Mudaliar, 49, from New Westminster, his mother-in-law, Zaruna Begum, 60, and brother-in-law Shahir Khan, 41, from Surrey.

The two survivors were the driver, a 42-year-old woman from New Westminster, and the passenger sitting behind her, a 70-year-old man, also from New Westminster.

Both are in hospital with undisclosed injuries, but are expected to make full recoveries.

The highway was closed to northbound traffic on Friday night, reopening on Saturday morning. RCMP collision experts are continuing to investigate the crash and have not ruled out speed as a contributing factor in the accident.
