More people may have voted in the 2011 civic election than in 2008, but it still translated into a decrease in overall voter turnout.

Blair Fryer, the city's communications manager, said 45,273 people were registered to vote.

At the end of the day, 10,614 people cast votes on election days, including those who voted at the advance polls.

That translated to a 23.45 per cent voter turnout, which compared to a 23.86 per cent turnout in 2008 and a 25.84 per cent in 2005.

"We had more voters this time, but a slight decrease in voter turnout when you run the numbers," Fryer said.

In 2008, 10,092 people voted, but the population has increased since that time, so more people were eligible to vote this time out. In 2005, the voter turnout in New Westminster was 25.84 per cent.
