Royal City residents can help out their fellow citizens by supporting the New Westminster Firefighters Charitable Society's annual tree-chipping event.

The tree-chipping event, one of the society's main fundraisers, allows the society to support a variety of groups and programs including the pediatrics unit at Royal Columbian Hospital and meal programs at local schools.

"Even if you don't have a tree, come out and talk to us and meet us," said Glen Bailey, president of the charitable society. "It is a fun event."

The tree-chipping event is at the Canada Games Pool parking lot on Jan. 7 and 8. The event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, gives residents a chance to dispose of their Christmas trees and enjoy a barbecue, popcorn, Tim Hortons coffee and hot chocolate, and entertainment.

Tree burning and fire extinguisher demonstrations will be held, weather permitting.

Local Scouts will be doing a bottle drive at the tree-chipping event. Scouts will get the proceeds of all bottles returned at the event, while firefighters will accept donations for the charitable society.
