Tower proposal has a number of concerns

New Westminster isn't keen on a proposed 39-storey building at the Plaza 88 development.

The developer is proposing to build a 39-storey mixed-use commercial/residential development at 900 Carnarvon St., which is currently home to the project's display centre. Because the building's proposed height and density exceeds what's permitted in the zoning bylaw, a rezoning is required.

Council authorized staff to work with the developer to resolve a number of concerns about the building's height, the number of units proposed in the tower, the size of the units, the proposed six levels of above-grade parking, pedestrian access to the tower and other urban design issues.

EWEN WORK DELAYED

Work on the Ewen Avenue project has been delayed but will soon be getting underway.

Jim Lowrie, the city's director of engineering, said a large transmission watermain under Ewen Avenue and railway issues have delayed the work.

"It will be proceeding," he recently told city council. "The tender has been let for improvements on Ewen Avenue."

The City of New Westminster has included funding for the Ewen Avenue project in the city's capital budget.
