There’s lots of great things to do in New West for the first weekend in May.

Some old favourites return, including neighbourhood walks, plant and garage sales. Some new offerings are also in the mix – including the Fun & Games Fest.  

Here’s a look at our top picks for the May 3 to 5 weekend in New Westminster:

Friday through Sunday

Janes Walks

Get moving at this year’s Janes Walks, which are community strolls led by local residents. As of Thursday, two walks had been planned for Friday and one for Sunday – but organizers were hoping other residents would sign up to lead walks. (You can sign up to lead a walk here.)

  • When: This weekend – Friday through Sunday
  • Where: Pattullo, Brunette River Parkway, Burnaby-Edmonds and maybe more – details about all the walks can be found online.

Friday, May 3

East of the Sun

Enjoy an evening of “unforgettable music that transcends cultural boundaries” when East of the Sun performs. Its music is a blend of Korean, Chinese and Western jazz influences.

Saturday, May 4

Plant sale

Stock up on plants for your garden at the New Westminster Horticultural Society’s annual plant sale. Organizers expect about 2,000 plants to be available at this popular sale, including perennials, trees and shrubs, annuals and vegetables.

  • When: Saturday, May 4, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Where: St. Thomas More Collegiate, 7450 12th Ave. (Just across the border at the corner of Kingsway and 12th Avenue in Burnaby.)

Fun & Games Fest

Have fun – and provide input into the New West’s new parks and recreation master plan at the Fun & Games Fest. At this free outdoor event, hosted by the City of New Westminster, you can share your thoughts on the city’s parks and rec needs, connect with other community members, and enjoy ping pong, mini sports, a photo booth, bubbles, snacks, and more.

  • When: Saturday, May 4, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • Where: Moody Park south field, located between the outdoor pool and the youth centre.

Neighbourhood garage sale

Search for treasures at the Massey Victory Heights 19th annual garage sale. More than 20 households are participating in this year’s sale, which runs rain or shine.

 

Sunday, May 5

Red Dress Day

Honour the memory and lives of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people across Canada and the USA at today’s Red Dress Day event in New West. It includes: a red dress display; free red dress pins (while supplies last); free snacks and beverages (while supplies last); family-friendly activities; and a ceremony hosted by Spirit of the Children Society

  • When: Sunday, May 5, 1 to 3 p.m.
  • Where: Hyack Square on Columbia Street, at the foot of Eighth Street.

New West Symphony

Delight in the sounds of the New West Symphony, which is featuring music by composers who were part of the Romantic Period at its season-ending concert.

  • When: Sunday, May 5, 2 to 4:30 p.m.
  • Where: The Sanctuary at Queens Avenue, 529 Queens Ave. The entrance is on Sixth Street.

Mary Poppins

Delight in the world of Mary Poppins – Royal City Musical Theatre Company’s 2024 production. The show features an irresistible story, and unforgettable songs and dance numbers.
