Police are reporting a rise in the number of thefts from vehicles and are asking the community to do its part in preventing these crimes.
Parkades and parking lots seem to be the targets of the recent spike with thieves getting in through garage gates, according to the New Westminster Police Department.
“Underground parkades and parking lots are targeted because thieves can break into multiple vehicles. These thefts are preventable by waiting for the garage gate to close, removing everything and securing your vehicle,” stated a bulletin from police.
To reduce the chance of your car getting broken into, the New Westminster Police Department recommends the following tips:
- Do not leave any valuables or personal possessions in your vehicle.
- Park in busy and well-lit areas and avoid dark, secluded locations.
- Close windows and lock all doors.
- Buy a stereo that is removable and take it with you.
- Engrave all on-board valuables with your driver’s license number and apply an ID decal.
- When using an automatic gate, wait for the gate to close behind you.
- If you see any suspicious person or activity near a vehicle, call the police.
- Invest in, and use good quality anti-theft devices.
Police also recommend using more than one anti-theft device. Steering wheel lock bars, shifter locks, brake pedal locks, car alarms and electronic immobilizers are some of the more popular anti-theft devices.
Police are also asking residents report all suspicious and criminal activity immediately, even if it isn’t an emergency. People can contact department through its non-emergency line, 604-525-5411.
