The Record has been named a finalist for overall excellence in this year's provincial community journalism awards - and one of its reporters has made the short-list as well.

The B.C. Yukon Community Newspaper Association released its list of nominees for the 2012 Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards this week.

The New Westminster Record is a finalist in the overall newspaper excellence in its circulation category, against fellow finalists the Cowichan News Leader Pictorial and the Parksville/Qualicum Beach News.

As well, Record reporter Christina Myers is a finalist in the business writing award category. Myers has been with The Record and its sister paper, the Burnaby NOW, since 2003, covering everything from community news to politics. Most recently, she's been covering health, seniors and family issues for both publications.

A number of fellow Glacier Media publications and staff are also up for awards this year in categories ranging from overall excellence, to advertising, classifieds, writing, editorial and photography awards, including the Richmond News, the Vancouver Courier, the North Shore News, the Coquitlam Now, the Chilliwack Times, the Cowichan Valley Citizen, the Surrey/ North Delta/White Rock Now and the Langley Advance.

The newspaper association has 125 member papers across B.C. and the Yukon, and it received 1,800 entries for consideration. Winners will be announced during the association's awards gala in Richmond on April 14.
