The power of words

We like our politicians down to earth - but not all the way into the gutter. Board chair James Janzen needed a refresher on appropriate language earlier this year after using a sexually-loaded phrase in an interview with one of our reporters.

We like our politicians down to earth - but not all the way into the gutter. Board chair James Janzen needed a refresher on appropriate language earlier this year after using a sexually-loaded phrase in an interview with one of our reporters. "I don't know why (Paul) has a real hard-on for Brian on this," he said, referring to a past president of the parent-advisory council and the secretary treasurer of the district, respectively. The potty-mouth turn-of-phrase didn't go over well - and he subsequently offered an apology.

Janzen's off-the-cuff manner is usually a welcome approach in a world where educational jargonese can 2012 make even the most interesting topics sounds dry, but this was a step too far.

Given all the talk in the district and beyond about bullying and the power of our words, we expect our elected officials to act to a higher standard. To that end, we hope Janzen added "thesaurus" to his Christmas wish list so the next time he's stuck for the right phrase, he won't get himself into more hot water.
