The replacement of Richard McBride Elementary School comes at a cost to the school district's budget surplus.

Folks will have their first chance to give feedback on the Richard McBride Elementary school replacement project at an event next week.

The school district is hosting the first community consultation event on Wednesday, Dec. 5 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the McBride gym, 331 Richmond St.

“Community input is valued as we launch the first phase of the design process,” notes a press release from the district.

The public will be able to share their thoughts and ideas for the new school and speak to representatives from IBI Architectural Group, the firm hired to design the new school.

The IBI group has worked on a number of projects in the Lower Mainland, including the renovation and seismic upgrading of Queen Mary and Lord Kitchener elementary schools in Vancouver.

The new Richard McBride Elementary School will cost $22.6 million and is expected to open in 2021.

A second community consultation event will be held in the spring, according to the district.
