New Westminster police are asking for the public’s help after a taxi driver was violently robbed last week.

Two men were picked up by the cab in Burnaby on July 2 at about 2 a.m., but only proceeded to rob the driver once they had reached their destination of Fifth Avenue and Ash Street in New West, according to a press release from police.

Upon arrival at their destination, one of the men brandished a handgun while the other produced an axe and demanded the driver’s wallet, the release stated.

The victim’s cooperation with his assailants was most likely what allowed him to escape the ordeal uninjured, according to the department’s media relations officer,  acting Sgt. Jeff Scott.

The two fled with the driver’s cash in hand.

The first suspect is described as Caucasian and having a skinny build. He also has an unknown tattoo on the left side of his neck, and was wearing a navy blue baseball hat and a light colored jacket.

The second suspect is described as a darker-skinned Caucasian man with a heavy build, and having blonde hair. He was wearing a white Adidas track jacket at the time of the robbery.

Police are is asking anyone who may be able to identify either of the two suspects in the photographs, or who may have information about the incident, to please contact Const. Adam Hohmann at 604-525-5411
