Tap time at Massey

Top tap performers slated to take the stage at Massey Theatre this weekend

A collection of North America's best tap dancers will be onstage at the Massey Theatre this weekend.

The West Coast Tap Dance Collective is presenting Tapistry, the 10th annual International Tap Day celebration, at the Massey on May 19. Showtime is 7: 30 p.m.

Tapistry will bring together both amateur and professional dancers in a celebration of the past, present and future of tap. The performance will showcase various styles of tap dance, from percussive to Broadway, and will also include Irish and Jewish dance.

Each year, the collective honours the careers of legendary Canadian tap icons as part of the show.

This year's show will pay tribute to all of its previous honourees, including Jim Hibbard, Jeni LeGon, William Orlowski, Heather Cornell, Len Gibson, Grace Macdonald, Jeff Hyslop and Blanche and Alan Lund.

It will feature the debut performance of the So Danca Legacy Project, a new work showcasing West Coast Canadian tap, choreographed by Troy McLaughlin and performed by Danny Nielsen, Paula Skimin, Peggy Giesbrecht, Daniel Alwell and Barbara Tutt.

Walk of Famers Jeff Hyslop and Jim Hibbard will be joined by many guest artists, including Julie Tomaino, Jennifer Bishop, Lindsay Sterk and Dayna Szyndrowski.

Tickets are $28, or $21 for members of the West Coast Tap Dance Collective. They're available online at tickets.massey theatre.com or by calling the box office at 604-521-5050.

The Massey Theatre is at 735 Eighth Ave.
