Wondering how to make Mom's special day on Sunday ultra-special? Here's a suggestion: treat Mom to a nice lunch, then head to Massey Theatre for the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra's Mother's Day concert at 2 p.m.
Music director and conductor Jin "Jack" Zhang and his musicians promise a concert that mothers will love.
Local arts promoter Tony Antonias says Zhang has several surprises planned for this concert, including two young soloists - Vivian Chen, a harpist from the UBC School of Music, who will star in Debussy's Dances for Chromatic Harp and Strings, and 14-year-old cello soloist Todd Huang, who will perform the first movement of Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1, an extraordinary creation, notable not least for its massive, tempestuous cadenza.
"Then comes the icing on the cake," says Antonias. "Mendelssohn's extraordinary and beautiful Symphony No. 3 - popularly known as 'The Scottish.'" This symphony was inspired by Mendelssohn's visit to Scotland and dedicated to Queen Victoria.
The concert starts at 2 p.m. and is presented by Westminster Savings Credit Union as part of its ongoing support of the New Westminster Symphony Orchestra.
Massey Theatre is at 735 Eighth Ave. As always, admission is by donation.
