Two suspects who allegedly robbed a taxi driver at gunpoint recently have been arrested.

As previously reported, police were called to Ash Street and Fifth Avenue around 2 a.m. on July 2 after a taxi driver was allegedly robbed by two men. The suspects used a gun and axe to threaten the driver before taking his wallet and all his cash.

New Westminster police circulated surveillance footage of the two suspects last week and were able to identify the two men, both Surrey residents, according to a media release from New Westminster police.

Vancouver Police spotted the two men and arrested them. Both remain in custody in Vancouver.

Patrick James Stacey, 25, is charged with one count of robbery and one count of uttering threats. Charges have not yet been laid against a second man, 32. Investigators with New Westminster’s major crime unit are expected to request charges later this week, according to the release.

“These individuals are currently in custody as a direct result of the astute observations by members of the Vancouver Police Department who recognized one of the males after viewing the (department’s) request for assistance,” said Acting Insp. Chad Johnston, in the release.  “These observations, combined with tips from the public have greatly assisted the NWPD in having these individuals taken into custody.”
